Menopause Q & A

When does menopause occur?

Menopause marks the time in a woman’s life when fertility ends. It’s caused by a marked decrease in estrogen and progesterone production.

Menopause usually happens in a woman’s 40s or 50s, with the average age being 51. Women may also experience menopause due to a hysterectomy or chemical reasons, such as chemotherapy.

What are the symptoms of menopause?

When a woman has not had a period for an entire year, she has entered menopause. But she can experience many symptoms in the years leading up to menopause, a time known as perimenopause.

Perimenopause is often marked by:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Fatigue and sleep disturbances
  • Mood changes and irritability
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Urinary incontinence

Other health issues that can arise during menopause include weight gain and irregular periods. Not all women experience the symptoms of perimenopause, and some have only mild symptoms.

How is menopause managed?

Lifestyle adjustments can help you deal with the issues of menopause. Regular exercise and a healthy diet can go a long way in helping you to feel good during menopause. If incontinence is a problem for you, pelvic floor exercises can help strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor.

Over-the-counter vaginal lubricants can help with vaginal dryness and discomfort during intercourse. Avoiding spicy foods, caffeine, and hot weather, and dressing in layers can help you deal with hot flashes.

You may also benefit from hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Many of the uncomfortable symptoms of menopause are due to fluctuations in your hormone levels. Dr. De Leon and Dr. Nguyen-Luu may recommend hormone replacement in the form of pellets, vaginal creams, oral pills, or injections, depending on the severity of your symptoms and your overall health.

What health issues accompany menopause?

Once menopause is confirmed, you’re at a greater risk for a number of health concerns. These include:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Decreased interest in sex or pain during intercourse
  • Weight gain

Proper diet, exercise, and medical screenings can help you maintain good health. Dr. De Leon and Dr. Nguyen can help you manage your health in the perimenopausal, menopausal, and postmenopausal periods.
